Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need fertilizer?

Just as humans, plants cannot produce their own nutrients. But unlike humans, plants cannot scavenge for their food. If you are not adding the nutrients to the soil, the plant will not have the food or energy to grow and produce.

I fertilize with compost or manure. Do I need additional fertilizer?

Absolutely. Most compost and manure do not include the essential nutrients and minerals that enable the primary nutrients (N-P-K) to actually be used in the plant. HyR BRIX® Fertilizers contain a balance of several nutrients. Each of these are required for the plant to fully develop and not always found in manure or compost.

How do I apply HyR BRIX® fertilizers?

In general, HyR BRIX® fertilizer can be applied at any time during the growing season and used to prepare the soil for planting. It can be applied multiple ways:

For best results apply before planting, scoop 3/4 cup of fertilizer for every 5 foot long by 2 foot wide band or 1 tablespoon for every 1 square foot. Spread the fertilizer evenly over top of soil, so that it is not heavily concentrated in one area.

For individual plants, spread 3/4 of a cup of fertilizer in a 2 ft. radius around the plant, at least 2-4” away from the plant. Finally, work the fertilizer into the soil (1-2 inches deep). You can plant any time after application. If fertilizer comes in contact with plant, shake or wipe off. Do allow the fertilizer to sit on plant foliage.

For container plants, apply 1/2-3/4 cup around the edge of large containers, mix and water into the soil. Since containers drain water out the bottom, multiple applications may be necessary. Always mix and water into soil. Do not use as indoor seed starter. If fertilizer comes in contact with plant, shake or wipe off. Do not allow the fertilizer to sit on plant foliage.

Can I place fertilizer in the hole I am planting into?

No. Most fertilizers can burn the leaves of the plant if it comes in direct contact. Never put fertilizer directly into the hole with your plant.

Can I spread fertilizer over top of an existing plant?

Yes; however, if fertilizer comes in contact with foliage, shake or wipe off. Do not allow the fertilizer to sit on plant foliage. Our preference is to spread 3/4 of a cup of fertilizer in a 2 ft. radius around the plant, at least 2-4” away from the plant.

Why do I have such a large amount of insects feeding on my plants?

Insects are attracted to “sick” plants and will continue to feed on the weakest plants without bothering the healthier plants much. This is because insects cannot digest the large amount of sugars that a healthy plant contains, so ensuring your plants have adequate nutrients can help to decrease the number of insects you are seeing in your garden.

How can I prevent disease in my plants?

All plants need multiple nutrients to build a strong immune system for warding off diseases. The soil is like the plants’ stomach, so when you feed the soil with a complete balance of nutrients the plants are not as susceptible to common diseases. Growers should also consider rotating the location of where the plants have been planted in the garden the previous year to prevent any spores from previous diseases infecting the same variety of plants.

Why is HyR BRIX® Fertilizer more expensive?

HyR BRIX® Fertilizers contain a multitude of nutrients (several more than most fertilizers provide on the market today), so you are getting a huge bang for your buck considering everything is right there in one bucket. Additionally, the cost per application is actually much less expensive because it only needs to be applied once in a normal growing season, while other fertilizers must be applied several times throughout the season – making HyR BRIX® the best value!

I plant an assortment of crops, which fertilizer should I buy?

We recommend HyR BRIX® Vegetable Fertilizer. This is our foundation blend and works well on all growing plants.
