29 May How to Maximize and Achieve a Lush Garden.
Spring has breezed by and we are well on our way to summer and a lush garden. Summer means it’s time to focus on maximizing our gardens to acquire the lush vegetation we all desire. Easy right? It can be, just follow these few simple steps, and you will certainly be enjoying the fruits of your labor in no time!
Location, Location, Location. It may not be real estate, but finding the right location to place your garden is a must. The amount of sunlight your garden receives will determine the types of plants that will grow best. All plants need sunlight to grow, but the amount and intensity of light needed vary by variety. When choosing your plants, pay close attention to the sunlight requirements listed on the labels. Most vegetable gardens require full sun, so find a place that receives 6-8 hours of full sun for the best vegetable garden!
Start with Healthy Plants. Examine your plants before buying them. The last thing you want is to bring home disease to your garden. Most of us know to look at the leaves and you can see if a plant “looks” healthy. But have you ever looked at the roots? If you can inspect your plant all the way to the roots before purchasing. Roots should be firm, usually white, and spaced all over the rootball. Stay away from plants with dark mushy roots. They are not healthy even if the tops look great…a rotted root system will eventually kill the plant and could promote disease in your garden.
Water Appropriately. All plants need water but to maintain a healthy lush garden you need to water appropriately. Choosing a watering method that limits moisture on a plants foliage is best. Most leaf problems are intensified when leaves are wet, so overhead sprinkling is not the ideal method to water your garden. Water deeply and thoroughly, but only when needed. Do not over water: Too much water can be just as damaging to your plants as too little water. The key is to ensure that the water gets down to the roots. If you water by hand, hold the leaves out of the way as you water the roots. Use of a soaker hose or a more precise drip irrigation system instead of a sprinkler will result in much healthier plants.
Protect with Mulch. Adding a layer of mulch around your plants will insulate the soil and help it retain moisture, not to mention it will crack down on weeds. Think of mulch as a layer of protection to help your plants thrive in your garden. A two to four-inch layer is ideal and provides many benefits to your plants by slowly adding organic matter to the soil as the mulch decomposes.
Feed your Garden. Plants thrive when fed properly and fertilizers help provide the essential minerals and nutrients needed to help plants grow. Choosing the right fertilizer is vital to obtaining a healthy lush garden. Organic fertilizers are used to create healthier, richer soils allowing your plants to flourish. Healthier soils grow healthier plants, it’s that simple! A fertilizer with a complete balance of nutrients can enhance the plants’ immune system to make the plant more resilient to common diseases and help increase production.
Whether your garden space is filled with flowers, fruits, or vegetables these five simple steps can make all the difference in achieving a dense, lavish garden abundant with healthy plants for you to enjoy.
